Salt Lake City Dog Parks Become Social Fitness Hubs for Residents
Salt Lake City residents are using dog-friendly parks for group workouts and social runs that combine pet exercise with human fitness routines.
How we reported this
Salt Lake City Parks and Recreation recorded 12,400 dog park entries at Liberty Park in June 2026, a 22 percent jump from the same month last year.
Summer heat and longer daylight hours have pushed more residents outdoors at the same time that local wellness groups expanded their schedules, creating daily overlap between dog owners and people seeking structured exercise. The overlap turns routine walks into group sessions that include interval training and stretching circles on grass fields.
Liberty Park at 600 East and 900 South offers a fenced dog area adjacent to the central lawn where trainers from the Wasatch Running Collective lead 45-minute Tuesday and Thursday morning sessions that start at 7 a.m. Sugar House Park at 1300 East and 2100 South provides a separate off-leash zone near the reservoir path, where the city-supported Canine Cardio program meets on Saturdays for a 5-kilometer loop followed by body-weight circuits on the picnic tables.
City data shows that 38 percent of all park fitness program participants in 2025 brought dogs at least once, with average attendance at Liberty Park sessions reaching 47 people per class. A standard annual dog license costs $15 for residents and covers access to both locations, while the Parks and Recreation department charges no additional fee for the group workouts themselves.
Weekly Schedule at Two Parks
Liberty Park hosts a Monday evening yoga-with-dogs class at 6:30 p.m. on the east lawn and a Wednesday trail-running clinic that departs from the 900 South gate at 5:45 a.m. Sugar House Park runs a Thursday boot-camp circuit at 6 p.m. near the 1300 East entrance and a Sunday family walk that begins at the playground at 9 a.m. All sessions require dogs to remain on leash during the fitness portions and allow off-leash time only inside designated zones.
How to Start This Week
Check the Salt Lake City Parks and Recreation website for the current calendar, arrive 10 minutes early to sign a liability form, and bring a collapsible water bowl for dogs. Participants can join any session without prior registration, though groups limit each class to 60 people to keep the fields from becoming overcrowded.
